Situated against a picturesque setting at the base of the Drakensberg escarpment, in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, lies the Blyde River Botanical Reserve. This “best kept secret in South Africa” boasts an 80ha residential development with a variety of fauna & flora and birdlife. The Blyde River Canyon is a significant natural feature of South Africa, located on the Mpumalanga and Limpopo border, and forming the northern part of the Drakensberg escarpment. It is 26 kilometers in length and about 800 meters deep, mostly consisting of red sandstone. It is the third largest canyon in the world, after the Grand Canyon in the United States and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia. It is the second largest canyon in Africa, and is known as one of the great wonders of nature on the continent. Maybe the best place at Blyde River Canyon are the "Three Rondavels", huge, round rocks, thought to be reminiscent of the houses or huts of the indigenous people, known as rondavels. This canyon is part of the famous Panorama route. This route starts at the town Graskop and includes God's Window, the Pinnacle and Bourke's Luck Potholes. Landlocked by the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve and nestled amongst the Drakensberg peaks on the banks of the Blyde River Dam, the Reserve is situated 35 km from Hoedspruit. The dam boasts one of the world’s largest active “Tufa” waterfalls. It is furthermore a 40 minutes drive to the Orpen gate of the Kruger National Park. Located on the reserve is the Blyde River Canyon Lodge which includes various facilities such as en suite bathrooms, satellite TV and air-conditioning, all leading out into the gardens.
